Richard Porson Paddison papers, 1791-1945.

Scope and content Earliest letters are from Paddison family members in England. Civil War correspondence concerns the capture of Fort Fisher, N.C.; monetary difficulties of the Confederate Quartermaster; and the Officers' Hospital in Augusta, Ga. Other topics include post-war conditions in the South, politics in North Carolina and Tennessee, diseases and various cures, and entertainment of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Other correspondence pertains to education at Peace Institute at Raleigh, N.C.; Salem College and Academy at Winston-Salem, N.C., McCallie School at Chattanooga, Tenn.; and the University of Colorado at Boulder. Topics include courses, student life, expenses, and summer activities. World War I letters written from France describe problems within the Medical Corps. World War II correspondence describes military life at Fort Bragg, N.C., the Army Exchange School at Princeton, N.J., and Camp Shelby, Miss; and the war in the Philippines. Genealogical materials concern the Pretlow and the Paddison families; the Foard family of Statesville, N.C.; the Bradshaw family of Rowan and Davidson counties, N.C.; and the Fraser, Moore, Simpson, and Thomson families of North Carolina. Other items include Friendly Cafeteria postcards, photographs of President and Mrs. Grover Cleveland on the Rockledge Steamboat, and a copy of a letter describing President George Washington's visit to Wilmington, N.C.

Biographical noteGeorge Paddison, originally from England, settled in North Carolina in 1856. His son, Richard Porson Paddison, resided in Point Caswell, Pender County, N.C., where he operated steamboats on the Black and Cape Fear rivers. His daughter Annie married Joel Cook Pretlow and lived at Point Caswell and at Wilmington, N.C. They had two sons, Joel Cook Pretlow, Jr. and James Paddison Pretlow.
